Ever since Laser was removed last year, the question has been, "what will be built in this location?"
I believe that one of 3 things can happen:
-A new coaster. From what the rumors have been saying, a GCI.
-A new play area which I think the park doesn't need since they have Camp Snoopy and Kids Kingdom down there.
    -A new flat ride.

    What do you think?

I'd say the greatest chance of seeing anything there would be a new coaster. I was also thinking GCI too, since they only have Thunderhawk. They are in desperate need of a new woodie, unlike Hershey who has three great woodies.

At this point it seems like the park will go without anything new (as far as rides) for the second season in a row. I think of this as either a good thing or bad thing depending on the result. Dorney does attract a lot of people from my area as well as New York resulting in their attendance being decent. Either the park is saving up for something big or being considered the SFA of the Cedar Fair chain.

Demon Drop - Rumor - (11/25/09) Crazy as it sounds, I’ve been told that pieces of Demon Drop have started to arrive at Dorney Park. That’s as bad an idea as Knott’s… who’s running this train wreck anyway? On top of Dorney suffering from all the same reasons that made Knott’s a poor choice for the ride, Dorney also suffers from noise complaint issues from their neighbors, and this is not known as a quiet attraction.

I never expected this, but it should be cool if it does happen and I think Laser's old site would work nicely there. The only problem like Lance said is the noise, but if they add magnetic brakes to the ride (like they were saying, it probably limit that.
I wanted to ride Demon Drop at Cedar Point if I went next year, but it may work out better than I expected. Smile

Some photos of Demon Drop sitting in the parking lot can be found here: http://newsplusnotes.blogspot.com/2009/11/mystery-ride-pieces-in-dorney-parks-lot.html

Come on guys lets get some discussion going here. It gets old just talking about Hershey; the site's not called Keystone Thrills for nothing!

Looks like it is now official then. What do you guys think about the move? Right now I've been hearing mixed reactions, but personally I think it was better off going to Knotts, Dorney ain't bad, but Michigan's Adventure could've used it more.

Maybe this is a step in the right direction for Dorney. That area down by where Laser was, is so dead, at least during my last visit in 2006. It's probably deader now with Laser gone. They really don't need those two kiddie coasters next to each other. They could be replaced with a decent-sized kiddie coaster. Put Demon Drop down there, as well as a GCI woodie, some more flats, and a second station for the Zephyr to transform it into a transport ride rather than just a scenic train ride, and the lower section of the park would be re-transformed and alive again.

According to the South Whitehall Township website, it looks like Demon Drop is officially coming to Dorney Park:
"DORNEY PARK & WILDWATER KINGDOM DEMON DROP
    MAJOR SUBDIVISION #2009-104
    REQUEST FOR PRELIMINARY/FINAL PLAN REVIEW

The application by Cedar Fair, L.P. to further develop the property known as "Dorney Park/Wildwater Kingdom" ,located at 3830 Dorney Park Road. The plan is to remove the existing "Krazy Kar Ride" , portions of paving, concrete walkways, and fencing to accommodate the installation of a new 131.42 foot tall commercial amusement referred to as the "Demon Drop" with accompanying electrical/mechanical building, curbing, concrete walkways, and landscaping and relocated lighting. The project area - just north of the Center Stage Area and west of the "Thunder Creek Mountain" amusement - would affect approximately .66 acres (29,000 square feet) of the 187- acre property. The subject properties are zoned CR Commercial Recreation."

There are also now reports of the ride cars now onsite.

Dorney Park: 2010 Demon Drop Discussion Empty Re: Dorney Park: 2010 Demon Drop Discussion

    Post  Ccron10 Fri Mar 26, 2010 5:02 pm

Demon Drop has officially been announced by the park:
Allentown, PA (March 25, 2010) – After focusing on the family in 2009 with the addition of the Good Time Theater and Snoopy Rocks on Ice show, Dorney Park turns its attention to the most daring Ride Warriors for the upcoming 2010 season with the addition of Demon Drop. The ride simulates a free-fall drop from a 10-story building, and will be the first true free-fall ride experience at DorneyPark. Site preparations are underway, with Demon Drop targeted opening date in early June.

The 131-foot-tall Demon Drop that will be located in Dorney Park’s lower midway near the Thunder Creek Speedway. Passengers will board Demon Drop at ground level into a four-person car that moves horizontally to the base of the tower. The car then climbs to the top of the tower in only six seconds! Once at the top, the car slowly inches forward into the drop area. Riders are suspended there for what seems like an eternity, then without warning, they plummet 60 feet in less than two seconds of true free-fall before experiencing the deceleration g-forces as the car enters a pull-out curve. A computerized braking system slowly stops the car, which is then returned under the track for the next daring passengers.

The Demon Drop style of a true free-fall experience will be relatively unique to Dorney Park and theNortheast United States. The planned ride location is only a short walk from Dorney Park’s Dominator drop-tower. Dominator’s three-tower structure, added in 1999, offers two unique ride experiences: one tower thrusts riders skyward, the other is a slow ascent to the top where riders then experience negative gravity as they are thrust toward the ground below. Vice President and General Manager of Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom, Jason McClure, adds that “Demon Drop will be a great addition to the Dorney Park skyline, the collection of three amazing drop-tower experiences now makes Dorney a haven for free-fall thrill-seekers.”

Pre-season pricing is now available on 2010 Season Passes. Purchases can be easily completed online at http://tickets.dorneypark.com. 2010 Season Passholders will enjoy unlimited admission on any public operating day, free parking, and special Season Passholder perks. Season Passes are the best value for a full summer of family-fun, thrills and entertainment.

Dorney Park amusement park opens for the 2010 season on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from May 1 to May 28, 2009. Dorney Park amusement park and Wildwater Kingdom waterpark are both open daily beginning Saturday, May 29 through Labor Day, September 6, 2009. For more Park information visit http://www.dorneypark.com or call 610.395.3724.

Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom is owned and operated by Cedar Fair Entertainment Company, a publicly traded partnership that is listed for trading on The New York Stock Exchange under the symbol “FUN.” In addition to Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom, Cedar Fair owns and operates ten other amusement parks, six water parks, one indoor waterpark resort, and five hotels. Cedar Fair also operates the Gilroy Gardens Family Theme Park in Gilroy, Calif. under a management contract.

From the park's facebook page, it seems like the ride has been getting mixed reviews by the general public.

Remember Demon Drop from Cedar Point? They're relocating it out to Dorney which will be its new home. I don't have a problem with it, but I agree, there have been mixed reviews about it. I wish they would do something with the area where Laser was, that annoys me that they have all that abandoned area down there with nothing except those two kiddie coasters next to each other.

I am thinking that the ride maybe close to being topped off since the two vertical steel beams at the top a too short for the cross braces.

awesome pictures! I went to school at Albright College and I drove by Dorney on my way home and back to school (took 78). I've been seeing this from the highway and never knew exactly where the footprint of this ride was! I went on this when it was at Cedar Point and rode a mirror image of it when Six Flags Great Adventure had Stuntman's Freefall. While we have Dominator, this is a nice addition for us because it's a different kind of freefall feeling, and not to mention it adds to our skyline Smile

I saw that Demon Drop has been operating daily now since this past weekend. Has anyone gotten out there since the opening? I'm kind of disappointed that they used the old Demon Drop name and everything... It's cool that Dorney has been "saving" these older rides from other CF parks, but it's starting to come off as CF's neglected wasteland... As stated before, the SFA of Cedar Fair. It looks good as it is, but it would have been nice if they had treated it like they did with Possessed, given it a new name and maybe some different theming, etc.

Also, I've never actually been to Dorney, although my dad grew up there and we've planned to go a couple times before. How were the Krazy Kars? Bumper cars are one of my favorite rides (I was raised on Knoebels' old vintage Lusses, so I guess I'm a bit spoiled when it comes to them), so it's sad to see parks taking them out like this... But if they were fairly mediocre then it doesn't matter all that much.

^ I rode it and it's a lot of fun...But your statement about it being a SFA of Cedar Fair is totally incorrect. Just because they have used rides doesn't mean it's a wasteland. Except for the park guests, Dorney is actually a really nice park. It's water park is top-notch too, much better than the Boardwalk. It's fine that they haven't changed the name, and I really didn't expect themeing, its Cedar Fair. They freshly painted it and redid the cars, that's all it really needed. Most of the GP think it's new anyway, along with VooDoo/Possessed. Dorney is in no way rundown like SFA, with the exeption of the paint on Steel Force. They've been replacing things and fixing things up for a while now.

yeah and honestly SFA isn't even THAT bad, they just haven't gotten a new coaster since Batwing, but that should change with Six Flag's anniversary where every park is supposedly getting a coaster. Dorney is a great place, if anything they are saving these great rides, there is NO impulse on the east coast so that was a smart investment for Dorney and these freefall rides are few in numbers anymore, in fact Demon Drop is one of the last left, so again, a nice move on Dorney to save it. It's cheaper to get these rides and save for the future a little bit, I see something brand new coming to DP in one of the next 2 or 3 seasons, especially since CF apparently might be making another deal on more GCI's.

Dorney Park: 2010 Demon Drop Discussion Empty Re: Dorney Park: 2010 Demon Drop Discussion

Alright, I can now give my awnest opinion on it: it sucked.

Got to the ride around 5:00 and started to get in line for the ride (would've been a 15 minute wait) and it broke down. My girlfriend and I decided to then ride Posessed(closed too, but opened after SF), Steel Force and Thunderhawk. It re-opened a few minutes later and we pretty much waited less than 5 minutes and got on it.
    The ride:
They pretty much load it like Roller Soaker at Hershey with 3 cars loading at once with each one going up the shaft while the others wait. The car banged when it was locked into the shaft, but the trip up the tower was pretty smooth as well as the transition into the drop part. It then waits 3 or 4 seconds before it drops. The drop was smooth, but rattles like hell when it braked and then transferred into the section before the station (pretty much the worst part).

    Final Opinion:
This ride felt like and sounded like you were going a hill in a metal trash can. I was dissappointed with it and it was a poor decision for the park to even save it, let alone not put in a Cedar Fair park without a drop tower. Before I rode it I thought it was great for the park to save the ride since it's one of the last of it's kinds, but now I think that some rides are better off in the junk yard and aren't worth the power on saving if they ride terrible.
On a sidenote, Possessed pretty much wasn't too interesting in my opinion either. The ride screeches and yells like hell and the launch was much less forceful than Storm Runner.

I plan on posting my full report and review of the park sometime soon. Let me just say that it wasn't to great, but it wasn't a total crap-chute.

I get what you're saying about Demon Drop, but personally for all of the reasons you explained is why I love that ride, it is a classic and on original, it's not the biggest or most forceful ride out there, but the drop is fun and the roughness adds to it Laughing
